Giving each child a strong academic base is the foundational component of Afikim’s after-school program for Israel’s children-at-risk. We enable youth to succeed beyond the classroom as well, with enrichment in technology, athletics, the arts and vocational training.
Extracurricular activities at Afikim enable children to excel beyond academics. Once a week, all children participate in activities including music, drama, sports and martial arts.
While these types of pursuits are easily available for children from more privileged backgrounds, Afikim’s children would have no access to them without this program. Like all facets of Afikim, extracurricular activities help close the achievement gap between disadvantaged children and those from higher socioeconomic backgrounds.
To enhance academic and technical skills, and to bridge the digital gap between children from disadvantaged backgrounds and their computer-savvy Israeli counterparts with access to the latest technologies at home, Afikim offers a top-level computer-education program. Each Afikim branch features a computer learning center outfitted with the latest technology and learning tools. Professional instructors closely guide each student at his or her own pace in acquiring the computer know-how and skills that are essential for their academic advancement.
In addition to the courses, Afikim’s children use the computers to prepare for homework assignments, research projects, and independent study.
Afikim provides training for attractive positions in the local job market, on a technical and an emotional level. Our courses emphasize and instill self-confidence, interviewing skills, knowledge of worker’s rights, and more. Every participant receives basic computer skills and literacy training, as well as additional, specialized training for careers as electricians, dental technicians, electronics technicians, caretakers, or other sought-after positions.
Personalized job placement assistance is a crucial component of this program, and participants are accompanied by our professional job counselors on each step of the journey toward a better job and a brighter future.
